Aotearoa Community Resilience Network (ACoRN)
Aotearoa Community Resilience Network (ACoRN) is a charitable trust committed to building resilient communities across Aotearoa.
It oversees Newlands Resilience Group (NRG), founded by Rodney Barber, who in 2018 began asking the questions ‘how we can be more community resilient to ensure we become more disaster resilient?”
Since 2019, NRG has conducted annual surveys to identify the competencies and vulnerabilities of the Newlands community. These have been designed to reflect the guidelines of the government through the National Disaster Resilience Strategy 2019, and the Treasury Living Standards framework.
The impetus behind this work is that better decisions will produce better outcomes, and that the best outcomes for community development in Aotearoa will include empowering communities to use the Coordinated Community and Disaster Resilience Model.
Local expertise and engagement invite the ownership needed to ensure that solutions are custom fit for the needs of specific communities, like Newlands.
This engagement and local ownership ensure that the essential bedrock of community development - the development of connections and relationships - is supported and strengthened through involvement in meaningful activities, for the benefits of all.
